Papers include: Records (1850-1946) consisting of deeds, warranty deeds, quit-claims, passport, wedding certificate, title abstracts, maps, receipts, water rights certificate and tax sale; Correspondence (1846-1945) primarily between John H. Couch and John McLoughlin, Benjamin Stark, and John M. Cushing; also correspondence related to Mary H. Couch's estate and a letter to John Lewis from C.E.S. Wood; Journals (1843-1912) of John H. Couch's voyages (1843-1849) and Nan Robertson's overseas vacation (1912) to Asia and the Pacific; Personal items (1840-1912) include Bible, prayer book, notes, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia. Many of the later records pertain to John H. Couch's wife, Caroline, and descendants Caroline Wilson, Clementine Lewis, and Elizabeth and Rodney Glisan.

Benjamin Stark was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 26, 1820, and attended school in New London, Connecticut.
